" One must absolutely know Vila do Conde. This charming historical town is a hidden gem! It developed around an impressive late 13th century nunnery, whose church remains intact, with the landscape dominated by the majestic seventeenth-century monastery. Equally noteworthy are the fifteenth-century cathedral, the aqueduct, the town hall, and the customs museum (which holds a replica of a sixteenth-century ship). Porto, with all its distractions and monuments (including the English Factory and several other connections with British history), is only 16 miles away (25 km); Gaia, with its Port cellars and wine tasting venues is only 20 miles (32 km). Many historical monuments, mostly medieval, lie in the vicinity: the monasteries of Vairão and Junqueira (12th-century), the churches of Rates and S. Cristovao de Rio Mau (12th-century), the fortified church of Leça do Bailio (14th-century) the romanesque bridge of Touguinha and the 16th-century church of Azurara. There are horseriding facilities 6 miles away and the beaches of Vila do Conde and Azurara are situated 6,5 miles away. "
