" Vaison la Romaine is famous for its Roman archaeological sites and has a separate and beautiful medieval town with narrow streets and ancient buildings set up high above the main town. It is very lively from early April to late October and people come from far away to see its famous street market on Tuesday, among the largest in Provence. Several summer festivals take place in the town's Roman theatre including music, dance, theatre and choral singing and all are easily accessible by level walking from the town centre. The surroundings offer magnificent landscapes and charming villages with countless opportunities for hiking and cycling. Vaison is a very convenient starting point for cycling up to the famous Mont Ventoux, a mecca for bicycle enthusiasts. The Baronnies hills and the Dentelles (« Lace ») de Montmirail are other picturesque places to visit locally. Vaison is also an excellent base to visit several other places of high cultural interest such as, Avignon, Orange, Nîmes, Arles and Aix en Provence as these can easily be reached during a one-day excursion. For wine lovers, Vaison is close to the world famous wine-growing domains of the Côtes du Rhone, including Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Beaumes de Venise etc. And last but by no means least this part of Provence has an abundance of olive oil, lavender, truffles, olives and other specialities typical for the region that make superb gifts. "
