See the personal website of the owner" Whale and dolphin spotting or fishing excursions can be arranged from Vila da Calheta, in the marina. Ferry trips from Funchal to the nearby island of Porto Santo can be arranged also in Calheta. Some of the island's finest scenery and walking are within a 20 minute (10 kilometres) drive into the mountains. In Calheta you should visit the international Centro das Artes (Art Center) and the rum factory and museum. You can find the old and the new, the roots and the modern, the local and the universal. Madeira is about contrast in every sense. In the village above Jardim do Mar, 5 kilometres away and named Prazeres (Pleasures), you can find a little zoo and an art gallery by the church. In Prazeres you also find a health resort in Jardim Atlântico Hotel offering a host of facilities, including swimming, tennis, sauna, gym, games room, vegetarian and wholefood restaurant, and a range of holistic therapies. When you arrive at the International Airport of Madeira (East area) you are about 50 kilometres away from Jardim do Mar (South-West, which is the warmest and sunniest area of Madeira). It's about an hour drive. You take the highway that will take your from the airport straight to Ribeira Brava. Then you continue in the so-called "Express Road" (mainly by the sea and in tunnels) from Ribeira Brava until Estreito da Calheta. Here you find a roundabout, take the left exit: a 4km road takes you down to Jardim do Mar.In the area:

"My wife, 2 year old daughter, and I spent a week at Sofia's place. It was very special and I look forward to staying there again soon. From the moment we arrived the stress we carried from the mainland was released upon meeting the owner Sofia. She is a warm, kind, and friendly woman and made sure we felt at home in her beautiful village of Jardim do Mar. The home was wonderful. It was clean, private, quite, had a view of the ocean, a nice sunny patio, and had all of the amenities we needed. We enjoyed that the village for the most part was car free and everything we needed was within a short walk. We did need the car to explore the rest of the island, but it was nice to park the car and walk through the town. The home was nicely located and we were able to walk through the village down to the ocean with our daughter and did not have to worry about oncoming traffic. We also liked being able to walk down to Joe's pub and take in the local scene. For us to have a quite and peaceful village to stay in was something quite special and I would recommend it to anyone.

"La maison était encore plus géniale que nous l''avions imaginé! Très propre et confortable, un accueil par une propriétaire adorable toujours pleine d''attentions découvertes au fur et à mesure du séjour. Village très authentique pas d''esbrouffes touristique à Jardim, la vue est toujours magnifique ou que vous soyez, c''est propre, fleuri, végétal et recueilli!! C''est également calme donc reposant. "Une jolie location,spacieuse (nous étions 5), où l''on se sent comme chez soi,bien équipée, avec un agréable jardin, au coeur du village paisible de Jardim do mar. Un véhicule est indispensable pour visiter cette belle ile. Si nous décidons un jour de revenir randonner au printemps, nous reviendrons avec plaisir séjourner chez Sofia, qui nous a réservé un accueil très chaleureux et sympathique. Annie et Dominique."

"Une très belle maison, spacieuse,confortable et très bien située, même s''il faut porter les valises sur quelques centaines de mètres... Jardim do Mar est un village vraiment ravissant et très attachant, et l''absence de voitures a permis aux enfants de naviguer en toute liberté. La proximité de Joe''s bar, l''âme du village, est un atout supplémentaire, dont il ne faut pas hésiter à abuser. Une semaine exceptionnelle et dépaysante dont nous nous souviendrons longtemps."
