Hints and Tips The apartment is nestled in Piazza Santo Spirito, which owes its name to the famous homonymous church (considered the most beautiful of Florence, partly because of its 38 chapels containing works of art whose value is such as to make it one of the most sumptuous galleries), which since 1343 gives its name to the neighbourhood itself. The basilica’s construction is due to the genius of the architect Filippo Brunelleschi, who personally oversaw its construction up to the time of his death in 1446. The bell tower, raised in 1506, is of the architect Baccio d`Agnolo.
The area is a historic neighbourhood, lively and vital, known for its workshops. In fact, they offer the best of Florentine traditions, among artisans, antique dealers, bookbinders and restorers, and shops for working in silver, wood, leather, inlays, decorations and precious stones.
In particular, the antique shops are mostly found in the nearby Via Maggio (so named as a contraction of the word "maggiore", meaning “largest”, because it was the widest street on the left bank, not for the month of May).
In Piazza Santo Spirito, on the last Sunday of every month, from early morning until evening there is a colourful flea market for antiques in the open air, a real opportunity for collectors. The Piazza and immediate vicinity also offer a number of typical Florentine cafes and trattorias.
