Orne is a department or
Lower-Normandy and is named after the river Orne. Green tourism has developed thanks to the highly preserved natural areas it counts. Nature is for sure the main advantage of the department. Therefore, holiday-makers who seek calm, serenity and nature will be satisfied.
The department has two regional natural parks: the one of
Perche and the one of
Normandie-Maine. You could practice hiking, mountain biking or ride a horse through forests, hills and valleys. Not far from those areas, you could see castles and manors, lasting from the Normandy of the Middle-ages. They show the glory of the past of this region. They are other great places one should not miss, such as the stud farm of Pin where beautiful horses are raised or the racecourse of Argentan. Indeed, Orne is the land of horse. Gastronomes will necessarily go by the city of
Camembert where the famous cheese has been created for the first time, and by the city of
Mortagne-au-Perche well-known for its blood sausages.
You could
rent an authentic house for a
weekend or a short stay in the cities as well as in the villages of the department. Otherwise,
bed and breakfasts will welcome you in a wonderful environment each time. It is also advised to discover tiny but very interesting cities which have their own history and characteristics, such as
Flers and La
Ferté-Macé known for their industrial past, or
Sées and its amazing cathedral or
Alençon, the main city of the department.
In the Western part, you will find
Bagnoles-de-l’Orne, a spa town where you could take care of your body and rest.
