At an altitude of 2600 metres, the capital of Bogota offers a unique viewpoint. Sights include historic monuments such as the Capital Municipal Palace, the Cathedral in the Big Square and the Bolivar Plaza. Other places of interest are the Museum of gold (which holds a collection of more than 100 000 pre-columbian artefacts), the salt cathedral of Zipaquira, the decali region - the principal area of sugar production, where modern technology merges with colonial tradition. Barranquila boasts an attractive port full of colour and the beaches of the Carribean coast are not to be missed.
