Every year the Madeira Wine Festival is held in September, which is the main period for grape harvesting, and it goes back to the population’s old customs since the island was first settled.

A blend of work and entertainment

The Madeira Wine Festival in a traditional event that takes place in Estreito de Camara de Lobos with the live grape harvest process and parade, and then for traditional folklore groups and entertainment Funchal is the place to head for. Enjoy a large harvest show, where grapes are collected and squashed by foot in front of a cheering crowd. Madeira is just a short travelling distance from most major European cities, and Funchal is the island’s capitel city, lying on the southerly coastline, and surrounded by beautiful beaches and resorts. Madeira is well known for its holidaymakers who come to enjoy the sunshine all year round, and if you fancy a bit of an adventure there are a number of stunning hiking trails along cliff-tops to choose from.
