Over the past 25 years the Sony Ericsson Open has turned into one the most glamorous of its kind, offering its guests a complete entertainment experience. The next tournament will take place from March 25th to April 5th so start planning your trip to Miami now!
The international tennis tournament began in 1985 in Florida and was dubbed the « Winter Wimbledon » at first.
It became the first major tournament of the year because, at the time, the Australian Open was held in December.
The first ball was struck on February 4th 1985, and the victory was Manuela Maleeva’s when she beat Angeliki Kanellopula 6-3, 6-2.
As well as the United States, the tournament was broadcast in many other countries, including Australia, England, France, Italy, Japan, Sweden and Western Germany.
In 1987 the tournament settled permanently in Miami, and in 2007 it became the Sony Ericsson Open when Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications became the main sponsor.
With Andy Murray’s win in 2009, Brits will be hoping that he can produce a repeat performance in 2010!
