Munich’s Oktoberfest

The Oktoberfest is a 16-day festival held each year in Munich during late September and it is one of the world’s most renowned beer festivals.

Beer and Lederhösen

Every year approximately 6 million people are drawn to the city from all over Germany and further afield to enjoy a few days of Bavarian culture. Tents are set up in the “Theresienwiese”, a large open space to the southwest of the city centre, and vast amounts of beer and traditional Bavarian cuisine such as Sauerkraut, Hendl and Weisswurst are sold to men and women dressed up in Lederhösen and Dirndl for the special occasion. Oktoberfest dates back to 1810, in commemoration of the marriage between Prince Ludwig (later King Ludwig) and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. If you fancy a break from all the festivities a great retreat is Stanberger See, Bavaria’s fourth largest lake just half an hour from Munich on the train.
