A little bit of history…
Hogmanay is the Scots Word for the last day of the year. Its roots reach back to the practice of sun and fire worship in mid-winter, and then evolved into ancient saturnalia, a great Roman winter festival during which people could celebrate free of restraint and inhibition. It is only in recent years that the Hogmanay has been celebrated on such a large scale, in particular after Edinburgh hosted the European Union Heads of State conference in 1992. The biggest Hogmanay street party was an estimated 300 000 people.
