The Carnival of Venice: history and traditions
In the 11th century, the inhabitants of the Serenissima would make the most of the days leading up to Lent by dressing up and having some fun. The 18th century became the golden age for the Carnival, and Venice turned into an elegant and sophisticated masquerade ball. When Venice lost its independence under Napoleon Bonaparte in 1797 the Carnival came to a stop. But since the 70s Venice saw its petticoats and commedia dell’arte masks make a come-back.
Nowadays, the Carnival is greatly appreciated by both locals and tourists from all over the world. The “Doge’s Ball” at the Pisani Moretta palace is the most waited for ball in the Carnival, and definitely the most chic! The Cavalchina ball and the warm chocolate sampling must not be missed either, and all this dressed up of course!
