Chase away the winter blues with a jazz-themed holiday

This year will see the 41st annual International Jazz Festival in Barcelona, a celebration of jazz sure to open your eyes to the great variety within this musical genre. The Festival sets out to encourage new talents, whilst putting the spotlight on some of the best in the business.

Music in a medieval setting

Concerts will be held in the Palau de la Musica Auditorium, the Barcelona auditorium and in the Espai de Danza y Musica de la Generalitat de Cataluna. Big names this year include saxophonist Wayne Shorter, from the famous Miles Davies quintet, Jimmy Cobb and a debut performance from Marcus Miller.

Concerts are running from the afternoon to late evening, but there are a whole host of other activities to keep you occupied when you’re not enjoying the jazz. Take a stroll down the main thoroughfare Las Ramblas, and let yourself get lost in the medieval maze of tiny streets that make up the surrounding Barri Gotic and El Raval. If shopping’s what you’re after then you’ll find a good mix of designer and high street stores in Gracia and around the Diagonal. Spend your evenings enjoying some traditional Catalan cuisine or soaking up the bohemian atmosphere in one of the colourful, and always original, bars.
